Sometimes my life moves fast. Maybe too fast. Between work, responsibilities, and the constant dings and alerts on our phones, it’s easy to feel disconnected from ourselves and from others.
But there’s one remedy that’s been available to us all along.
Nature!
You might think that holistic wellness is only about eating well and exercising. That's what I used to think. But a key component of wellness is balance. It’s the harmony of mind, body, and spirit that helps us to live our best. I interpret that to mean focus on each of those components because they're each important in their own way.
And if there’s one thing that naturally promotes this balance, it’s the great outdoors!
Taking a deep breath of fresh mountain air, soaking up the warmth of the sun, or sitting by a tree, are all examples of how nature has a way of restoring what modern life often takes away.
I was at the beach the other day and I just felt different standing with my feet in the water and watching the waves crashing on the sand. I could feel my shoulders relaxing and any tension that I was carrying start to melt away. It really was mesmerizing! The fresh outdoor air I was breathing was better than any nature-inspired spritzer sold at Bath & Body Works. And I love Bath & Body Works!
Let’s break down how nature supports our holistic wellness and some ways we can incorporate nature to improve our well-being.
The Connection Between Nature and Headspace
Nature Lowers Stress and Improves Focus
Ever notice how a walk in the park can instantly lift your mood? That’s no coincidence. Studies show that spending time in natural environments reduces cortisol levels, the stress hormone, while increasing serotonin and dopamine, the brain’s “feel-good” chemicals.
The result is a calmer, more focused mind.
Even small doses of nature can help ease anxiety and improve concentration. This is why outdoor breaks are such a game-changer when you’re feeling mentally drained.
You can get these small doses by working near a window with a view of greenery (I'd prefer it not to be fake greenery...) or taking five minutes to step outside.
Heightened Creativity and Mental Energy
If you’ve ever found yourself stuck on a problem or lacking inspiration, nature might just be the answer. Being in green spaces has been linked to better problem-solving skills and increased creativity.
The mental reset that comes from stepping away from screens and into a natural setting helps clear your head and make room for fresh ideas.
So the next time you hit a creative block, take a nature break. You might be surprised by the ideas that start flowing.
How Nature Supports Physical Wellness
Move and Have Fun
Exercise is a key aspect of physical health, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend hours and hours at the gym. Just being out in nature provides an effortless way to stay active.
Some great examples include hiking, swimming, biking, or even just a walk around your neighborhood. And it doesn’t feel like a chore.
Fresh air, changing scenery, and the feeling of being part of something bigger make movement in nature more enjoyable. And when you enjoy it, you’re more likely to stick with it.
Tap Into Your Body’s Natural Rhythms
Our bodies love routine and natural cycles. Exposure to natural light, for example, helps regulate our circadian rhythm, making it easier to wake up feeling refreshed and fall asleep more naturally.
Grounding, like walking barefoot on grass or sand, has also been shown to have physical benefits, from reducing inflammation to improving heart health. Connecting with the earth, literally, can have deep effects on overall well-being.
The Emotional Benefits of Time in Nature
Emotional Awareness
Nature is a wonderful teacher. Watching the seasons change, listening to the rhythm of waves, or watching a sunrise can be a humbling experience. Life is a cycle of highs and lows, growth and stillness, and it’s okay to ebb and flow with it.
Spending time outdoors can make us more in tune with our emotions, helping us process feelings in a more grounded way.
Welcome More Joy
There’s something incredibly enjoyable about the experiences nature gives us. Birds chirping in the morning, the sound of a gentle rainfall, or the crunch of leaves under our feet on an open trail.
These natural sounds are far more soothing than the sounds of cars honking in a traffic jam on the way to work.
Plus, time in nature can help grow relationships with others. Easy activities like enjoying a picnic with family or sitting outside on the back patio and stargazing with someone you love are ways that nature builds meaningful bonds in a way that technology just can’t.
Nature and Spiritual Growth
Finding a Sense of Interconnectedness
Many spiritual traditions emphasize the importance of nature in personal growth. Spending time in natural settings can make us feel more tied to the earth, to ourselves, and to others.
Being in nature often brings a sense of mindfulness, encouraging us to be present in the moment. When we slow down and truly take in our surroundings, we can focus on our place in the world.
Being Grateful and Expressing Appreciation
There’s something about the vastness of nature that makes our problems feel a little smaller. Standing at the edge of an ocean or walking through an ancient forest can shift our perspective.
We can better appreciate the beauty of life, no matter how chaotic things might feel.
Simple Ways to Add Nature into Your Daily Life
If a getaway to the mountains isn’t possible this weekend, don’t worry! You can still get the benefits of nature quite easily. Here’s how.
- Start your morning with fresh air. Open a window, step outside, or have your morning coffee on the porch.
- Take breaks outside. Even a five-minute walk can do wonders for your mood and focus.
- Bring nature indoors. Houseplants, flowers, and natural light can create a calming environment inside your home.
- Unplug and be present. Leave your phone behind when you go for a walk and really let yourself go in your surroundings. It will be there when you get back!

Final Thoughts on Nature and Holistic Wellness
I hope that by now you see that nature is a great way to improve holistic wellness and your overall well-being. You don’t have to move to the forest to experience the benefits that nature has to offer. Although I guess you can give it a go! Practically speaking, I'd suggest going for a daily walk, or just sit for a few quiet minutes by an open window.
The more you invite nature into your life, no matter how small, the more you’ll feel its positive impact on your life.
