Ever feel like you’re running on empty while your to-do list keeps growing?
I’ve driven a car to empty and it’s an awful experience. I had other things to do that day. But I was literally stuck, because guess what? A car runs on fuel. And when I ran out of gas, I was immobilized until I refueled. Thankfully I was not on the highway when I ran out of gas, otherwise that could have ended up far worse.
In retrospect, it took me more time, effort, and stress to get going again. I would have been better off making sure that I was well-fueled the entire time. But that’s not what happened, I let my car go to “E”. I consider that to be an inefficient way to operate. I don’t recommend doing this by the way!
It can be tempting to turn to an energy drink as a quick fix, but that’s not going to address the underlying problem. Our bodies run on energy. Real, lasting energy.
Having energy is more than just getting more sleep, although I do feel better when I get more rest. I find that having lasting energy is how I manage my mind, body, and spirit throughout the day.
Some days, I might wake up feeling great, only to find that I’m completely drained by mid-afternoon. Other days, stressful situations leave me feeling stuck, making even the simplest tasks feel exhausting.
But there’s good news! At least in my experience it’s good news. We can shift this by learning how to balance our energy.
We’ll take a look at practical, doable ways to keep your energy levels steady, from simple movement habits and mental resets to emotional and spiritual practices that ground you. You’ll learn how to create a daily routine that keeps you feeling your best.
Understanding Energy Balance
What Does It Mean to Have Balanced Energy?
When your energy is out of balance, everything feels harder. You lose focus, your patience runs thin, and even small tasks feel impossible. But when you understand how to regulate your energy across all aspects of your life (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual), you start to feel more focused, calm, and in control. You can get through your day with greater ease and actually have energy left over for the things that matter most.
Energy balance is about feeling steady and grounded rather than drained, scattered, or overwhelmed. It means you have enough energy to do what matters most without burning yourself out.
Instead of constantly aiming for “high energy”, the focus shifts to managing your energy so that you feel good throughout the day. Alert when you need to be, calm when it’s time to relax, and strong when the tough times come around.
The Four Energy Pillars
The four energy pillars are like the core parts of how I keep myself feeling good, steady, and able to show up in life. Here’s how I see them.
1. Physical Energy
This is my body’s fuel tank. It’s how I eat, sleep, move, and rest. When I’m taking care of my body by getting enough sleep, eating food that helps me feel full and focused, and moving around a little each day, I feel way more capable of handling whatever comes my way.
2. Mental Energy
This is what keeps my mind clear and sharp. If I’m constantly overwhelmed, multitasking, or drowning in distractions, I burn out fast. But when I give my brain space, like by writing things down, taking screen breaks, or just focusing on one thing at a time, I can think straight and make better decisions.
3. Emotional Energy
This one’s about how I feel on the inside. My moods, reactions, and how I deal with stress. If I let myself carry everyone else’s problems or ignore how I’m feeling, I get drained. But when I check in with myself and do things that bring me joy or peace, I feel emotionally steady and more myself.
4. Spiritual Energy
This is what gives life meaning for me. It can be religion or feeling connected to something bigger. Whether I pray, spend time in nature, or just sit quietly and breathe, that’s what helps me feel reset.
When one of these is out of balance, the others are affected too. That’s why learning to manage all four areas is what can get you to have sustained energy and improved well-being.
Physical Energy: How to Recharge Your Body
Prioritize Quality Sleep
Lack of sleep is one of the biggest energy drainers. But it’s not just about how many hours I get, it’s really the quality of my sleep. For me “sleeping” for 10 hours in an airport is NOT the same as sleeping for six hours in a comfy bed. Ask me how I know...
Sticking to a consistent bedtime, avoiding screens before bed, and creating a calming nighttime routine can help improve sleep quality so you wake up refreshed instead of groggy.
Fuel Your Body with the Right Nutrition
Energy crashes aren’t random. They’re often the result of poor nutrition.
Staying hydrated, eating whole foods, and keeping meals balanced with protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs can help maintain steady energy throughout the day.
Caffeine and sugar might give you a quick boost, but they also lead to crashes. Being mindful of how certain foods affect your energy can make a huge difference.
Move Your Body Daily
Movement is essential for keeping energy levels up. You don’t need to do intense workouts every day, but even simple activities like stretching, walking, or yoga can help boost circulation and keep you feeling energized.
Listen to your body! Some days, you might need a more active workout, while other days, gentle movement is enough.
Mental Energy: How to Stay Focused and Clear
Declutter Your Mind
Mental fatigue often comes from being overburdened. Too many thoughts, tasks, and distractions competing for your attention.
Creating a focused workflow, practicing brain dumps in a journal, and setting aside time for mindful planning can help clear mental clutter so you feel more in control of your day.
Set Energy-Protecting Boundaries
If you constantly feel drained, it may be time to set better boundaries. This includes saying no to things that don’t serve you, limiting exposure to negative influences, and managing digital distractions like social media, emails, and notifications that steal your focus.
Recharge with Mental Breaks
Your brain needs breaks to function at its best. Stepping outside for fresh air, practicing deep breathing, or taking short pauses between tasks can help you maintain mental focus and avoid burnout.
Emotional Energy: How to Protect Your Inner Peace
Be Mindful of Who (and What) You Surround Yourself With
Your energy is influenced by the people and situations you interact with. Identify relationships and activities that drain your energy and make a choice to surround yourself with uplifting people and content.
Doing so creates a more positive emotional space to give you that inner peace you deserve.
Regulate Your Emotions
Bottling up emotions drains energy fast. Instead, practice processing them through journaling, deep breathing, or even grounding exercises. Finding healthy outlets to release stress can help you maintain emotional balance.
Practice Gratitude and Joy
Shifting your focus to gratitude instantly changes your energy. Take time to acknowledge what you’re grateful for. Laugh more! Get involved in creative activities that bring you joy. These kinds of practices can help lift your emotional state.
Spiritual Energy: How to Feel More Aligned and Inspired
Find Time for Stillness and Reflection
Pausing to reflect brings clarity and balance to your energy. This can be done through morning or evening rituals, meditation, or just a few minutes of quiet time to yourself.
Silence and solitude provide a reset that allows you to check in with yourself and realign your energy.
Live in Alignment with Your Values
Do more of what excites and inspires you, and cut out what drains you. Saying yes to what lights you up and saying a firm no to what doesn’t is one of the best ways to protect your energy.
Daily Practices for Spiritual Connection
Whether it’s meditation, prayer, affirmations, or spending time in nature, finding simple ways to nurture your spiritual energy creates lasting balance and fulfillment.
Creating a Daily Energy-Balancing Routine
Morning Practices
How you start your day can set the tone for your energy. A morning routine that includes movement, hydration, intention-setting, or mindfulness practices can help create steady energy throughout the day.
Midday Recharges
Avoiding energy slumps means taking breaks for a midday recharge. It doesn’t have to be overly time consuming. You can step outside, get in a quick stretch, or do a brief breathing exercise. These recharges throughout the day can keep your energy flowing.
Evening Wind-Down
Releasing stress at the end of the day is just as important as starting strong. Creating a wind-down routine with relaxation techniques, journaling, or mindful reflection can help restore energy for the next day.
