Sooo…I've already gone into feminine energy and masculine energy for women in my previous posts (go read those first if you haven't, seriously, they provide helpful context).
At this point you might then be wondering, “ok, but how do they work together?”
Great question! That's what this post is about, the interplay between the two, and why understanding both might be really useful for you.
I put together a list of things every woman should know about both energies. Stick around for this one. It’s quite possible that a few of these might surprise you!
The Real Explanation (I Promise It's Simple!)
Everyone (both men and women) has access to both energies. It has nothing to do with gender! Think of them less like personalities and more like two different modes you already operate in depending on the situation.
Masculine Energy
This is the mode you're in when you're planning, getting ish done, making decisions, setting boundaries, solving problems, and getting stuff done. It's directional. It moves toward something.
Feminine Energy
This is the mode you're in when you're creating, connecting, receiving, playing, following your instincts, and enjoying something without needing it to produce a result. It flows rather than drives.
Guess what? You already use both of these. Probably today.
When you mapped out your week on Sunday night? Masculine energy. When you got lost in a conversation with your best friend and two hours disappeared? Feminine energy.
When you set a limit with someone who kept crossing a line? Masculine energy. When you let yourself enjoy a vacation instead of optimizing it? Feminine energy.
See? You're not learning something new. You're just getting vocabulary for something you already do.
Ok…So What?
Here's where it gets useful.
Too many women are running almost entirely on masculine energy…and burning out because of it.
And I think society kind of set us up for that. We're praised for productivity. For handling everything. For being capable and reliable and on top of it.
Workplaces reward output. Parenting rewards being present and organized. Relationships reward being low-maintenance. And so we create a life around doing, producing, managing, and executing.
Which works…
...until it doesn't.
The burnout, the exhaustion, the weird resentment that comes out of nowhere, the feeling like you're running a machine that never turns off, a lot of that comes from staying in one mode for too long without a counterbalance.
You may think it’s a character flaw, but really it’s a natural response to an environment that keeps rewarding one thing.
The Balance Part (and Why It's Probably Not What You're Picturing)
Often when we hear "balance," we picture a perfect 50/50 split or some kind of daily ritual. But no, that's not really how this works.
The balance changes depending on what's happening in your life. Sometimes it calls for more structure, more direction, more output. E.g., a launch at work, a move to a new place, a difficult conversation you've been putting off.
Rely on that masculine energy, it's a tool (and it's a good one).
Other times call for more creativity, more connection, more receiving. That’s feminine energy. A vacation you let yourself enjoy. A project you're doing because you love it (not because you have to). Time with people where you're fully there instead of planning the next thing.
Notice how the emphasis isn't to be in one mode? The idea is to have access to both and use them on purpose instead of defaulting to whatever the day demands.
What This Looks Like
In Relationships
When you're always the one initiating, planning, problem-solving, and managing the emotional temperature of the relationship, you're doing a lot of masculine energy work! That can create a dynamic that’s tiring in a way you can't quite name.
Bringing in more feminine energy, receiving, being present, letting things come to you sometimes, can shift that without you having to change who you are.
At Work
Masculine energy is fantastic for deadlines, strategy, and leadership. Feminine energy is what appears in creative brainstorming, reading a room, and building real relationships with your team.
The women who seem unshakeable at work have usually figured out how to move between these fluidly, even if they've never called it that.
As a Parent
If you have kids, you're probably already doing this. Holding a limit with a toddler who's losing it? Masculine energy. Getting on the floor and playing pretend for an hour with no agenda? Feminine energy. Your kids need both from you, and so do you!
With Yourself
Ahh, this one gets overlooked. Masculine energy applied to yourself looks like constant self-improvement, optimization, and keeping track of your progress. Which is great…until you start treating yourself like a project to be completed.
Feminine energy applied to yourself looks like enjoying the stage you're in, appreciating where you already are, letting rest be rest.
So…What Do You Do with This?
A great way to start is by noticing which mode you're operating in at any given moment. But free of any judgment!
Are you in planning mode? Executing mode? Solving a problem? That's masculine energy doing its job. Great!
Are you creating something because you want to? Connecting with someone for the sake of connection? Following an instinct without needing to justify it? That's feminine energy doing its job. Also great!
The awareness alone helps a lot. Because once you can see which mode you're in, you can start asking whether it's the right tool for the moment, or whether you've defaulted to it out of habit.
Soon you’ll notice that you’re asking for help when you'd normally handle it on your own. You’ll let a creative project be messy instead of making it perfect. You’ll sit with someone without trying to fix anything.
Well done!
