There’s this 80s song that I love, that has the lyrics “Everybody’s working for the weekend…”. It’s called “Working for the Weekend.” Hey, how about that!

Anyways, as you can imagine, the song is about getting away from the grind of the workweek. The weekend is something to look forward to!

But what really happens is that by the time Friday rolls around, most of us are barely hanging on. The week has probably been packed, work, errands, responsibilities, and everything else that we call life.

And while weekends do offer a break from the busy week, they often turn into a catch-up zone filled with chores, last-minute plans, or scrolling your way through two days and wondering where the time went.

I recall a time when I would end my weekends feeling more tired than I did during the workweek! There was so much that I had to get done. I felt like I was living on autopilot. Then I would rinse and repeat the entire cycle.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t all that pleasant to be around. Who wants to spend time with someone who’s cranky all the time? Not me!

A weekend self-care routine helped me break that cycle. And it can break the cycle for you too.

Instead of letting the days slip by, it gives you structured ways to actually rest, reset, and take care of yourself. It doesn’t necessarily mean just do less (although it might not be a bad idea to trim back some of your weekend plans if you’re doing too much).

The idea is to fold in some time that’s focused on you and you only (yay!), so that you’re not dragging yourself into Monday already drained (boo!).

What a Weekend Self-Care Routine Looks Like

A weekend self-care routine is a mindful way of using the entire weekend to come back to yourself. This is all about your space. You get space to rest...space to reflect...space to do what you usually push aside during the week. You might be in the mood to slow down or move your body.

It’s all up to you!

I like to think of it like a three-part system that spans from Friday all the way through Sunday. Each day serves a different purpose, one to unwind, one to restore, and one to prep.

That balance is what helps you feel like you actually had a weekend when Monday rolls around again. Huzzah!

One Day of Care Isn’t Always Enough

A lot of people try to cram their entire version of rest into Sunday night, then wonder why they still feel off. I know because that’s why I used to do. It doesn’t work because self-care isn’t a one-and-done deal.

When you give yourself the full weekend (or as much of it as you realistically can), you can get into a better rhythm. You can ease out of the stress of the week, enjoy some needed downtime, and get organized for the days ahead.

When you stretch your care over the weekend, you leave less room for burnout and way more time for rest, or fun, or whatever makes you feel like you again. It becomes less of a reaction to stress and more of a lifestyle rhythm you want to keep up with.

A Weekend Routine Can Help You Feel Better, Period

Using the weekend to care for yourself in a consistent way helps on all levels, not just the obvious ones. You’re lowering stress before it builds, which means you’re also protecting your focus, energy, and mood.

You sleep better. You think more clearly. And you start the week feeling more put together, not like you’re already catching up.

And the thing about a routine, is that it’s something you do over and over again. So the first time you give it a try, it might not work out at smoothly as you hoped. But more than likely you’ll feel better at least knowing you’re starting to take care of your own needs.

You’ll slowly recognize that you don’t have to wait to burnout to give yourself rest. A weekend routine is just one way to keep checking in. Your weekends can be a time to get things done and a time to recharge your batteries.

Self-Care Weekend FAQs

Why not just do self-care on Sunday?
Cramming all your rest into Sunday night usually leaves you still feeling off. Spreading it across the weekend lets you unwind, restore, and prep at a pace that actually works.
What if my weekends are already packed?
Start small. Even one screen-free evening or a slow, mindful breakfast can make a difference. And it might be worth trimming back a plan or two if you’re doing too much.
Do I have to follow the Friday, Saturday, Sunday breakdown exactly?
Not at all! Think of it as a menu. Pick the ideas that fit your weekend and your mood, and leave the rest.
What if my first weekend routine doesn’t go smoothly?
That’s totally normal. A routine is something you do over and over again, so just tweak what didn’t work and try again next weekend.

Give Your Weekends a Purpose that Serves You

If your weekends are solely for catching up on extra work or numbing out with a screen, then I think that this might be what you need. Working into a weekend self-care routine gives you a real chance to slow down, reset your energy, and be ready for the new week ahead.

Sure, errands and tasks still need to get done, but you also deserve to dedicate at least some of your time to activities that help you feel good. I hope you give it a go!
